As part of Culture Night the Embassy hosted a Vernissage on September 17 for the two week long exhibition Ireland in Frame. In its second year, the project expanded to the cities of Frankfurt and Cologne.

The exhibition displays a selection of street photography from four Irish photographers Linda Brownlee, Terry McAuliffe, Brendan O Sé and Danielle Houghton, providing snapshots of the rich tapestry of life in Ireland.

The hybrid event featured a Q+A with the artists in the courtyard of the Embassy.

The Embassy is also grateful to O’Hara’s and Magners for their sponsorship of the exhibition, offering complementary drinks to participants of the trail.

Due to end on October 1, there is still time to walk the trail and experience Irish Street-Photography in Berlin and Frankfurt, with a finissage for those of you in Cologne. However if you don’t find the time to complete the trail, a selection of the exhibition can be found on our website and there will be a review at Badfish Bar in Prenzlauerberg with a photographer’s Stammtisch on the 6th of October.

Roddy Doyle's book "Love", published in 2020, will be released on October 20 in German by GOYA Verlag. Translated by Sabine Längsfeld. Audio book read by Stephan Schad.

About the book:

Two old friends that have got a lot to catch up on. A witty, dramatic and revealing novel about love, friendship, guilt and aging.

"Old friends back in their Dublin days, Davy rarely sees Joe anymore – maybe for a pint or two when Davy’s over from England to check in on his elderly father. Now married and with grown-up children, their lives have taken seemingly similar paths. But they are not the men they used to be. As two pints turns to three, then five, Joe recounts a secret, and the two men set out to revisit the haunts of their youth.

Joe has left his wife and family for another woman, Jessica. Davy remembers – she was the girl of their dreams all those years ago, the girl with the cello in George’s Pub. As Joe’s story unfolds across Dublin so too do the memories of what eventually drove Davy from Ireland: his first meeting with Faye, the woman that would become his wife, his father’s sombre disapproval, the pained spaces left behind when a parent dies. The two friends try to reconcile their versions of the past over the course of one night.

Love is as much a hymn to the Dublin and pubs of one’s youth as a delightfully comic, yet moving portrait of what it means to try to put into words the many forms love can take throughout our lives."

 Irish Parent Café

Feature Image

We would like to invite Irish parents in Germany, but especially their children, to a special literature edition of our Irish Parent Café.

As usual, this Irish Parent Café will offer a platform for Irish parents to exchange views and experiences on being a parent in Germany. This time, however, the Embassy has also partnered with Literature Ireland, who will present some of the latest releases of Irish children’s literature. In addition, we would like to invite every child to bring along their favourite book and say a few words about why it’s their favourite.

We look forward to getting to know more of you and digitally meeting the youngest members of the Irish diaspora and to delve into their favourite books.

An email with instructions on how to join the meeting will be sent to those registered about an hour before the start of the event.

We would be grateful, if you could share your children’s ages with us when registering, so we can pick the new releases accordingly.

Scéalta /ʃcialˠta/

A gaelic word with a rich history. As early as a thousand years ago, the scéalaithe – the storytellers – would enchant their audience with Irish myths and legends. They travelled throughout the land and collected stories of adventures, but also things of general interest and importance to share them with the people they would meet along the way. Even today – centuries later – the art of storytelling is still of great importance.

Four artists from four different corners of Europe – from the Carpathians to Donegal Bay – have been telling such stories all their lives through Irish music and dance. Chance brought the four artists to Berlin and made it their home and their centre of creative activity. Here they became friends and following the art of the scéalaithe (storytellers) they tell their own tales of home, travel, friendship and love.

This is how Scéalta came to life. A quartet of modern storytellers present Irish music and dance – Patrizia Sieweck (fiddle & vocals), Danny O'Connor (guitar & vocals), Nicole Ohnesorge and Gyula Glaser (dance).

Scéalta makes stories come to life through rousing Irish folk songs and melodies with captivating Irish dance – presented with a modern touch.
